This review/interview of Great Lake Swimmers is due, so with out further a due here you have it. No really, I just want to start off by saying I really enjoyed seeing Kate Maki preform I didnt know what to expect but it really reminded me of growing up in Edmonton and spending my summers volunteering at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. I dont know why it just really hit home. Kate Maki is a must to see again for me when she comes through Van. Dale Murray was pretty nice on the pedal steel.
I want to give everyone a heads up I had a great interview with Tony Dekker from Great Lake Swimmers and between the million things I’m doing the interview will be up this weekend along with the review.
I can say this, I was very taken back by Kate Maki. Truthfully I never heard her before the the show and was pleasantly surprised.
I’ll get right into it, the Simian Mobile Disco (SMD) show in one 1 word was fun! Not as fun as the first time they were here last time around but I had a great time. Now people say that its a waste to watch 2 guys tweak a bunch of knobs and play some pre recorded tracks, and I can agree with this to some extent. What I think they seem to forget is that you enjoy the show because you like the music, which is what I did, and my friends too! A few things drew me in the second time around lights, energy and tons of fucked up people dancing.
Like any show in Vancouver, you got your hipster, your hipster run offs, bar kids and young girls. What really stuck out to me was the lack of merch that was a big piss off. Did they sell out before they got to van? Not sure, I really didn’t think the hype was there, I mean for one thing the show was not a sell out, as tickets were released at the door. From what I could tell there was no opening act or I just missed it. Either way not to concerned at this point. No more then 10 min of being at the show I am approached by two guys who seem to be bar stars but I cant tell. They proceed to remind me of how we made fun of Abe Vigoda at the last Diplo show. Me being fucken drunk at the show didn’t help jog my memory. I told these douches the usually “oh ya that was funny, got any E.” That easily drove them away, on to the dance floor as lights come on and the air fills with weed.
I can say this much, the set was what I expected, didn’t seem any different then the first time I saw them at Richard’s. the lacking element was the sound, which leads to believe I’m going deaf or the sound at the Commodore sucks. I must confess the sound does suck there. Its so disappointing, you’re waiting and waiting for it to get louder but it never does, its like a really bad dub step party full of burnt out fat raver chicks with way to much gunt. If you were at the Richards show, like me you walked away half blind, this time I brought sunglasses but it was again slight waste. Its like they didnt know the size of the joint.
The crowd seemed to be into the show for the most part. Besides the odd fucken loser who never danced before and I step on his toes the whole night. Oh and lets not forget the massive amounts of jocks at the show. What’s up with that? SMD did play all my fav tracks in a good order, The high light I must say was the drunks chicks from Barcelona who kept trying to smoke all of the weed and drink my beer. We had our own party just singing im I’m From Barcelona songs Shortly after the set ended, they flipped the lights on and and I ran into the rest of the crew from Barcelona who all seemed pretty Euro Trashy, and wouldn’t hesitate to rob me blind and leave me left for dead. They liked to make it very clear they are not from Mexico. Point made drunk ladies. I hope you didn’t get date raped.
over all I give it yess for I would see them again.
